Roonak inherited only a box from her father, a cache of memories that included hunting binoculars, an old pistol, a pipe, four notebooks, and a few bundles of paper. However, she could not read any of the writing on the papers because she could not understand her father's native Kurdish, so different from her Azerbaijani. A lifetime later, when her son sent a photo sample of the writing to a relative, she learned how little she really knew about her father. The present work consists of those very notebooks--the memoir her father, Captain Hamad Mawludi, left behind. He was the captain of peshmergas in the Kurdistan Republic of 1946 and was only able to pen down his life after he learned how to read and write in prison at 40 years old. Mawludi's life story presents a unique perspective of the 20th century, of Kurdish life, the Republic, and more from the view of an honest, working-class individual. This first-of-its-kind memoir sheds light on the ethnic and religious conflicts in modern Iran, the Great Persian famine, the former Russian Tsar and the USSR influence on the diverse people of Iran, the Kurdish struggle for independence, and finally, the collapse of the Iranian monarchy.
